Forensic mode and diagnosis mode

Two separate modes: expert examination only reads and keeps the evidence; diagnosis repairs and adapts. When each applies and what to do to repair while a case file is open.

ModeWhat it is and when it applies
Forensic modeWhat it is for: Examining and keeping the evidence (experts and law enforcement). What the unit does: Only reads: it does not write, run routines, erase or program. When it applies: While a forensic case file is open for that unit, and in the inspection plans. What is recorded: The case file's chain of custody.
Diagnosis modeWhat it is for: Diagnosing and repairing. What the unit does: Reads and also repairs: soot or ash reset, forced regeneration, adaptation after replacing a particulate filter, fuel pump adaptation, resetting the inducement after the repair and the like. When it applies: In every other case. What is recorded: The platform history, as always.
  • The strip at the top tells you which mode you are in. “Forensic mode: read only” appears when a forensic case file is open for the unit you chose.
  • With a case file open, an order that writes, runs a routine or erases is refused with a notice. You have two ways out: close the case file (only the person who opened it can) or register an intervention.
  • To register an intervention, write the reason (for example, “Particulate filter replaced after the fault”) and confirm it with the security key. Your orders to that unit go ahead for four hours, and the intervention goes into the case file's chain of custody and its report, so it is known what was done to the vehicle after the reads.
  • The same applies to the diagnosis tunnel and to PassThru: with a case file open for the vehicle's unit, a remote session can only read. Composing or opening a tunnel with routines, writing or programming, or turning on a unit's PassThru mode, is refused with the same notice until you close the case file or register an intervention. Closing a tunnel or turning PassThru off is never refused.
  • Without an open case file nothing is restricted: in diagnosis mode you repair and adapt with the usual permissions.

Important: In both modes these stay forbidden: removing or disabling emission systems (deleting the particulate filter, EGR or AdBlue), extracting PINs, keys or seeds, writing keys or the immobiliser, deploying an airbag, erasing crash data and touching the odometer. A legitimate repair, such as adapting after a part was replaced or resetting the counters after the repair following the manufacturer's procedure, is none of those.
