Vehicle details: identifying it by the VIN
Make, model, engine and year from the VIN and the ECUs, with where each value comes from and how sure it is.

- The VIN reliably gives the manufacturer (its first three characters) and, in North America, the year and whether it is typed correctly (check digit). In Europe the year is an estimate.
- The vehicle catalog adds model, generation and engine when it knows the type of VIN; the part numbers and calibration the ECUs report help choose the engine.
- Each value says where it comes from (confirmed, learned in your organization, catalog, ECUs, NHTSA vPIC or VIN) and whether it is certain, likely or estimated.
- If it is not clear, choose the engine among the catalog's options.
- Open the details and check the values.
- Select “Confirm or correct”, change what is needed and save.
- If you added the vehicle with its VIN, keep “Remember” checked: the next vehicle of the same type will come with your values.
The VIN is not stored in clear: the platform keeps only its encrypted fingerprint and the vehicle type (positions 1 to 8 and 10), never the serial number.
