Reading fault codes by car make

Generic codes are read the same way on every make. What changes is the rest: its control units, its diagnostic addresses and its service information. Pick yours.

What every make has in common

  • The standard 16-pin diagnostic socket (SAE J1962), within reach of the driver's seat.
  • Emissions diagnostics (EOBD): on cars in the EU, gasoline ones since 2001 and diesels since 2004.
  • The generic codes (P0, P2, C0, B0 and U0), with the same meaning on every make.

What changes from one make to another

  • The manufacturer's own codes (P1, many P3, B1, C1, U1…), whose meaning only its service information gives.
  • How to reach the other control units: addresses, diagnostic gateways and protocols of each platform.
  • Service functions (maintenance, regeneration, calibrations), specific to each make.
