Serial port (RS-232) of the ECOPRO Gen4
Read Modbus registers from a machine and carry its serial line in a remote session.
Reviewed by Daniel Morales, founder of Reprorace SL, on
The ECOPRO Gen4 has an RS-232 port on its vehicle connector (DB-44: transmit on pin 25, receive on pin 9 and ground on pin 39). It is for machines with a serial port: forklifts, generator sets, refrigeration units or gas analyzers.
1. Combined DB-44 to OBD and DB-9 cable
- OBD branch (J1962): the usual vehicle diagnosis.
- Male DB-9 branch: pin 2 receive, 3 transmit and 5 ground, like the COM port of a PC.
- With this cable the tool knows it has OBD and RS-232 at once and can use both in the same session.
2. Straight cable or null-modem
| The machine is… | What to use |
|---|---|
| A PC-like device (DTE): the usual case for forklifts, generator sets, refrigeration units and analyzers | A null-modem adapter, which crosses pins 2 and 3 |
| A modem or a programming port (DCE) | A straight cable |
| A device that requires RTS/CTS or DTR/DSR | An adapter that bridges 7-8 and 1-4-6 on the machine side: the ECOPRO Gen4 does not have those signals |
3. Read Modbus registers
- Open the page of your ECOPRO Gen4 and find the “Serial port (RS-232)” panel.
- In “Read Modbus registers” enter the machine address, the register type, the first register and how many to read (up to 125).
- If the machine does not use 19,200 baud with even parity, change it in “Advanced options”, “Serial line”.
- Press “Read”. You will see a table with the number of each register and its value.
Tip: The read only reads: it never writes to the machine. If it does not answer, check the speed, the parity, the cable and whether a null-modem is needed.
4. Serial channel in a remote session
Besides the vehicle bus, a remote session can carry the serial line of the ECOPRO Gen4 with its speed, bits, parity and flow control (none or XON/XOFF), under the same customer consent and if the tool's policy allows “Serial tunnel (RS-232)”. In the session's PassThru panel you will see “Serial channel of this session” with its parameters: set up the machine's program the same way.
Important: The COM port of the Diaglana PassThru agent on the PC is being prepared: until it arrives, the PC program cannot open the session's serial channel yet.
