Codes and warning lights
What are readiness monitors and why do they matter for inspections?
Readiness monitors show whether the car has finished its emissions self-tests since the codes were last cleared. If they are incomplete, the car has not yet been able to check systems such as the catalytic converter or the oxygen sensors, and an emissions inspection may not accept the test.

Which monitors are there?
Some run all the time: misfire, fuel system and components. Others only run under certain driving conditions: on gasoline engines, catalyst, oxygen sensors and their heaters, the evaporative system, secondary air or EGR.
On diesels they differ: oxidation catalyst, NOx reduction (SCR), particulate filter, boost pressure, exhaust gas sensors and EGR. Each car only has the ones that match its equipment.
Why do they become incomplete?
When codes are cleared, when the battery is disconnected or replaced and, on some cars, when a control unit is reprogrammed, every monitor goes back to “not complete”.
To complete them, the car needs its conditions: cold starts, idling, steady speed, deceleration. There is no mileage that works for every car; it usually takes several days of normal driving.
What happens at the inspection?
Emissions testing of vehicles with OBD can read the diagnostic port: codes and monitors, as in many US state inspections, the UK MOT on newer cars or the Spanish ITV. Incomplete monitors usually give away a recent reset.
Each country, state and procedure decides how many incomplete monitors it accepts and how it is rated. If you are going to an inspection, read the monitors a few days before.
General guidance only: every manufacturer and model has its own details. Always follow your vehicle's manual and, if in doubt, ask a workshop.

Frequently asked questions
How many miles does it take for them to complete?
There is no single figure: it depends on the monitor and the brand. Drive for several days with varied trips and read them again.
Does replacing the battery reset the monitors?
On many cars yes, like the codes and some adaptations.
Can I pass the inspection with an incomplete monitor?
It depends on the country, the state and the procedure: some accept one incomplete. The safe option is to arrive with all of them complete.
