Buying and selling a used car
How can you tell if the odometer has been tampered with?
There is no single test, but there are signs: mileage that does not match between the cluster and other control units that also store it, jumps in the invoices and inspection records, and wear that does not fit the reading. On some cars, diagnostics can read those other records; if they match, that guarantees nothing, and if they do not, it is a reason to investigate, not proof.

Where does the car store its mileage?
The instrument cluster displays it, but on many cars other control units also store mileage: the engine, transmission, ABS or body unit, often alongside each logged fault.
Which units do so, and whether they can be read, depends on the make and model. Some recent cars also report the odometer reading through standard diagnostics.
Which signs can I check without tools?
Service invoices, the maintenance book and inspection records: in many countries the mileage recorded at each inspection can be looked up in an official vehicle report or history. A drop is a clear warning sign.
Wear on the steering wheel, shifter, pedals and driver's seat, and oil change stickers with mileage.
What can diagnostics add?
Comparing the cluster with the mileage stored by other control units and with the mileage logged next to stored faults. A big difference needs an explanation, for example a replaced cluster.
The Diaglana pre-purchase report flags when the mileage does not match between control units or does not fit the engine's usage. It is a sign to check, not proof of tampering.
What do I do if I am suspicious?
Do not buy until it is cleared up: ask the seller for invoices and the official vehicle history, and talk to a shop. If you have already bought it, keep the evidence and get advice on your rights.
Tampering with an odometer is prohibited or a crime in many countries. No reputable shop does it, and the Diaglana terms of use forbid it.
General guidance only: every manufacturer and model has its own details. Always follow your vehicle's manual and, if in doubt, ask a workshop.

With the ECO-LITE in the OBD port, a shop that works with Diaglana reads the mileage stored by each control unit that responds, and the pre-purchase report flags inconsistencies.

Frequently asked questions
Will a cheap scanner detect a tampered odometer?
Usually not: it reads the engine and rarely other control units. And even when it does, a tamperer may have changed several records.
Is it normal for two control units to show different mileage?
There can be small differences or a replaced unit. A large difference needs explaining.
Is it legal to replace an instrument cluster?
Repairing or replacing it is, if the real mileage is kept. Falsifying it is what is illegal.
