Instrument cluster goes dead or gauges fail: what to do
If the instrument cluster goes dark, the gauges drop to zero or many warning lights come on at once, the cluster has usually lost power or communication with the other control units. The cause is often the battery, a ground, a connector or the cluster itself.

Is it serious? Can I keep driving?
Carefully, and only as far as the garage. See a shop soon and drive carefully: without the cluster you cannot see your speed, the temperature or the warning lights. If it goes dead often or you lose other functions too, do not drive at night or on highways until it is checked.
A careful, general answer: only someone who inspects the car can say whether it is safe to drive. When in doubt, stop somewhere safe and call for assistance.
Most likely causes
- Low voltage or grounds: with a weak battery or a bad ground, the cluster reboots.
- Communication between control units: if the cluster gets no data, the gauges drop and warning lights come on.
- Cluster connector: a poor contact behind the cluster.
- Failure of the cluster itself: solder joints or a display that degrade with age.
- Speed sensor: if only the speedometer fails, it may be the speed signal.
Listed from more to less common in general; on your car they may be different. A fault-code reading and a check at the garage confirm which one it is.
To understand it better: I have several trouble codes at once: which one should I fix first? What do U codes and lost communication (U0100) mean? How can you tell if the 12 V battery is failing?

What you can check yourself
Check whether the radio, the lights or other systems fail at the same time.
Notice whether it happens over bumps or when turning the wheel: that points to a poor contact.
Check the battery terminals.
Safe checks only: with the engine off and cold whenever you look under the hood, without taking anything apart and without touching hot or moving parts.

How the ECO-LITE helps diagnose it
Plugged into the OBD socket, the ECO-LITE reads the fault codes of the control units that answer, with the freeze-frame data captured when the fault happened, and shows live data on your phone or computer. With your permission, your garage can see them remotely before you bring the car in.
What to look at here: communication codes (U0155 and others), battery voltage and the vehicle speed reported by the engine control unit.
Frequently asked questions
Why do all the warning lights come on at once?
When one control unit loses communication, many others report it at the same time. There is usually a single cause.
Can an instrument cluster be repaired?
Often, yes. If it is replaced, a shop must keep the real mileage; tampering with it is illegal.
Will the car pass inspection with a faulty cluster?
Warning lights or a speedometer that do not work can be defects. Fix it beforehand.
