Car radio or screen turns off by itself: why
If the radio or the screen shuts off or restarts by itself, the usual cause is a voltage drop (a weak battery, a start-stop restart) or the car's power-saving mode, which switches off accessories to protect the battery. If it restarts with a healthy battery, it may be a fault in the unit itself or its software.

Is it serious? Can I keep driving?
Usually not urgent, but do not ignore it. It does not affect driving, but do not get distracted trying to fix it on the move. If the screen that goes off shows the backup camera or important warnings, take extra care when maneuvering.
A careful, general answer: only someone who inspects the car can say whether it is safe to drive. When in doubt, stop somewhere safe and call for assistance.
Most likely causes
- Weak battery: during cranking or a start-stop restart the voltage drops and the radio reboots.
- Power-saving mode: with the engine off, the car switches the radio off after a while.
- Infotainment software: freezes that a manufacturer update fixes.
- Connection or wiring: a loose connector behind the unit or a loose fuse.
- Connected accessories: a USB charger or a device that causes restarts.
Listed from more to less common in general; on your car they may be different. A fault-code reading and a check at the garage confirm which one it is.

What you can check yourself
Notice whether it happens when starting, with start-stop or with the engine off.
Unplug chargers and USB devices and try again.
Check for low battery or power-saving messages on the dashboard.
Safe checks only: with the engine off and cold whenever you look under the hood, without taking anything apart and without touching hot or moving parts.
How the ECO-LITE helps diagnose it
Plugged into the OBD socket, the ECO-LITE reads the fault codes of the control units that answer, with the freeze-frame data captured when the fault happened, and shows live data on your phone or computer. With your permission, your garage can see them remotely before you bring the car in.
What to look at here: battery voltage at start-up and at rest, and communication codes of the infotainment control units.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the radio switch off with the engine off?
Many cars switch it off after a while so as not to drain the battery. It is normal.
Will an update fix it?
If the fault is in the software, often yes. Ask a shop or see whether the manufacturer publishes updates.
Can it mean the battery is failing?
Yes: rebooting at start-up is a typical sign of a weak battery.
