Diagnostics basics
Can you diagnose a hybrid or electric car with an OBD scanner?
Partly, yes: hybrids have the same OBD port and the emissions diagnostics of their combustion engine, and most electric cars also have the port for their modules. Everything specific to high voltage, such as the traction battery, the inverter or charging, usually sits in each manufacturer's codes and protocols, and any work on that part is for trained professionals only.

Which codes do hybrids and EVs have?
Besides the engine's generic codes, there are P0A codes and others for the high-voltage battery, insulation, the inverter and battery cooling, such as P0A80 (replace hybrid battery pack) or P0AA6 (isolation fault).
Many manufacturers add their own, and part of the information can only be seen with their software.
What can I check myself safely?
The 12 V battery, which hybrids and EVs also have and which causes many no-start problems, the dashboard lights and the codes the port gives you.
Do not open, disconnect or touch high-voltage components: the orange cables and the traction battery can hold dangerous voltages even with the car switched off.
When should I stop and call roadside assistance?
With a hybrid or high-voltage system warning, a red light, a burning smell, smoke or an isolation code. Follow the owner's manual and do not try to restart the system over and over.
For the repair, look for a shop with staff trained in high voltage.
General guidance only: every manufacturer and model has its own details. Always follow your vehicle's manual and, if in doubt, ask a workshop.

Frequently asked questions
Do EVs take the emissions test at inspection?
They have no tailpipe emissions; the inspection checks the rest of the vehicle according to each procedure.
Does a hybrid battery code mean replacing it?
Not always: it can be a sensor, the cooling or a module; a specialist shop confirms it.
Can I use the same scanner as on a gasoline car?
For generic codes, yes; high voltage needs a tool with the manufacturer's protocols.
