Warning lights
Seat belt light will not go off: what it could be
If the seat belt warning stays on with the belt fastened, or goes off with the passenger seat empty, the buckle switch or the seat occupancy sensor is usually at fault. It is a minor fault, but those sensors also report to the airbag system.

Is it serious? Can I keep driving?
Usually not urgent, but do not ignore it. You can drive, always with your belt on. If the airbag light is on as well, see a shop soon: the airbags and pretensioners might not work as they should.
A careful, general answer: only someone who inspects the car can say whether it is safe to drive. When in doubt, stop somewhere safe and call for assistance.
Most likely causes
- Buckle switch: dirt, coins or a worn microswitch.
- Seat occupancy sensor: a bag or a heavy object on the passenger seat also sets it off.
- Connector under the seat: moving the seat or cleaning can loosen or damage it.
- Fault stored in the airbag unit: if the belt sensor has failed, the unit records it.
Listed from more to less common in general; on your car they may be different. A fault-code reading and a check at the garage confirm which one it is.
To understand it better: What does a pending, stored or permanent code mean? Can an OBD reader damage the car or drain the battery?

What you can check yourself
Buckle and unbuckle a few times and see whether the warning responds.
Remove heavy objects from the passenger seat.
Look under the seats for a loose connector, without pulling on the yellow airbag wires.
Check whether the airbag light is on as well.
Safe checks only: with the engine off and cold whenever you look under the hood, without taking anything apart and without touching hot or moving parts.

How the ECO-LITE helps diagnose it
Plugged into the OBD socket, the ECO-LITE reads the fault codes of the control units that answer, with the freeze-frame data captured when the fault happened, and shows live data on your phone or computer. With your permission, your garage can see them remotely before you bring the car in.
What to look at here: codes from the airbag control unit (belt and occupancy sensors) and its communication.
Frequently asked questions
Can the seat belt warning be turned off?
Some cars let you configure it, but it is a safety feature. The right fix is to repair the sensor.
Is it dangerous to touch the seat connectors?
The yellow connectors belong to the airbag: do not unplug them with the ignition on. If in doubt, let a shop look at it.
Why does it chime with a backpack on the seat?
The occupancy sensor reads the weight as a passenger without a belt.
